About the product

Antique Teakwood Dowry Chest (Damchiya) from Gujarat

19th-Century Teal Blue Galla Trunk | Handcrafted Teak Storage Chest with Iron Detailing

A Rare Dowry Chest from 19th-Century Gujarat

This exquisite 19th-century Damchiya — a traditional Indian dowry chest — hails from the western state of Gujarat. Handcrafted from solid teakwood and adorned with its original turquoise pigment, it embodies both the practical and ceremonial essence of Indian domestic life. These chests, often gifted to brides as part of their dowry, were treasured heirlooms symbolising prosperity, craftsmanship, and devotion.

The piece features a gently curved dome lid reinforced with hand-forged iron bands and fitted with a triple latch for security. The grid-style façade is studded with iron rosettes, serving both aesthetic and structural purposes. Its original wheels and side handles — once used to move the chest easily during wedding processions or household relocations — remain intact, a testament to its authenticity and rarity.

  • Condition: Excellent structural integrity with age-consistent wear

Why This Piece Is Important

This Damchiya reflects the spirit of Indian matrimonial tradition, where beauty and utility merged to create objects of lasting significance. Each detail — from the curved lid to the grid of iron studs — was designed to protect the valuables it once held while embodying blessings for prosperity and harmony.

As one of the few surviving examples with original wheels and hardware, it represents a vanishing era of Indian folk craftsmanship. Its enduring structure and vivid patina make it more than furniture — it is a piece of living history, preserving the artistry and sentiment of 19th-century Gujarat.

Styling Tip

Let this chest be the focal point in a hallway, bedroom or sitting room. Its bold turquoise tones pair beautifully with raw linen, brass décor, or woven textiles. Use it as a coffee table, blanket box, or display feature to bring both colour and narrative to your space.
