About the product

Antique Early 19th-Century South Indian Wooden Storage Box

Hand-Painted with Hindu Samudra Manthan Mythology | Heritage Collectible Trunk
Circa 1800s | Folk Religious Art | Museum-Quality Decorative Chest

A Sacred Story in Wood and Paint

This remarkable early 19th-century South Indian wooden storage box is a rare example of devotional folk art meeting functional design. Entirely handcrafted from solid hardwood and painted using natural mineral pigments, it depicts the Hindu myth of Samudra Manthan—the legendary churning of the cosmic ocean to obtain Amrita, the nectar of immortality.

The front panel portrays Lord Vishnu reclining on Sheshnag, surrounded by Goddess Lakshmi and celestial figures, while the sides and lid are adorned with finely detailed narrative motifs and floral borders. These hand-painted scenes are executed in bold tones of red, green, and ochre—classic hues of South Indian artistry that have aged beautifully over two centuries.

Every element, from the iron latch and hinged lid to the carved base, reveals its dual purpose: a practical household storage chest elevated into a spiritual artwork, once used in temples or traditional homes for storing valuables, scriptures, or ceremonial objects.
