About the product

Monumental 18th-Century Mughal Fort Door

Hand-Carved Teak with Ogee Arch & Iron Studwork | Circa 1750 | Indo-Islamic Architectural Salvage

✦ A Gateway to Empire

Commanding in presence and steeped in power, this monumental Mughal-era fort door dates to the mid-18th century—a time when Indian architecture reached its zenith in scale, symmetry, and spiritual geometry. Rising to nearly 3 metres in height, this arched double-door is a rare architectural survivor from the fortified estates and palatial havelis of Mughal India.
Crafted from solid old-growth teak, and fortified with a lattice of hand-forged iron straps and riveted studs, the piece combines strength and splendour in equal measure—embodying the Indo-Islamic tradition of making even utilitarian forms deeply expressive.

✦ Architectural Grandeur & Sacred Geometry

Crowned with a graceful ogee arch, the door pays homage to Islamic architectural ideals of balance and transcendence. The panels beneath are arranged in precise rectilinear grids, each intersection capped with original iron rivets—a meditative pattern invoking order, discipline, and divine proportion.

Doors such as this marked more than a boundary—they symbolised the transition from the worldly to the sacred, or from public space to private sanctum.

✦ Craftsmanship Details

  • Material: Solid teak wood, hand-hewn and aged

  • Hardware: Original hand-forged iron gridwork and riveted studs

  • Joinery: Traditional mortise and tenon (no modern nails or screws)

  • Finish: Naturally aged teak with warm patina; oxidised iron in deep charcoal hues

  • Form: Arched lintel; squared panel grid with vertical spine and iron ring pulls

✦ Dimensions & Weight

  • Width: 218 cm

  • Height: 293 cm

  • Depth: 10 cm

  • Weight: Approx. 400 kg

✦ Origin & Historical Significance

Likely originating from Northern or Central India, this door was part of a fortified compound, palace gate, or ceremonial courtyard. Its scale and integrity suggest it served a high-ranking estate or military-administrative residence—a structure where visual power equalled practical defence.

The ogee arch form and ironwork reflect a blend of Persian, Central Asian, and Indian architectural influences that defined the Mughal aesthetic from the 16th through 18th centuries.

✦ Styling & Installation Ideas

  • Install as an entry to a courtyard, temple, or grand home

  • Use as a sliding feature door in modern conversions or loft-style spaces

  • Mount as a statement art piece in galleries, cultural venues, or luxury boutiques

  • Incorporate into hospitality or architectural restoration projects with Indo-Islamic themes

Its scale allows it to become a space-defining feature, whether mounted upright, integrated into stonework, or used as a backdrop to sacred or curated interior spaces.
